How to Flush Your Toilet With a Bucket of Water

Can You Flush the toilet When the Water is Off?

ToiletYou don’t have to run to the neighbor’s house during a plumbing project or during an unplanned event to use the restroom. Before your water supply is turned off, be prepared by filling 2 gallon buckets with water. Toilets can be flushed by dumping these 2 gallon buckets of water into your toilet bowl. By doing this, you’ll be able to get one toilet flush per bucket. This method works just as well as normal flushing, although it won’t refill your toilet bowl.

To better prepare yourself, you may want to fill your bathtub with water in advance as to insure there will be no shortage of water during such an event.

How to use a bucket of water to flush the toilet
  • Lift the toilet seat and toilet lid, resting them back against the front of the toilet's tank. This will give you a larger opening in which to pour the water.
  • Fill a two gallon bucket with water from the bathtub or from a water jug.
  • Dump the bucket of water into the toilet's bowl in one thrust. Pouring the water in slowly will only fill the bowl, while heaving the water in is unnecessary and may create a mess. The goal is to provide as much force as an ordinary flush.
  • Repeat dumping in another bucket of water if necessary to clean the bowl of any residue. Wipe any water that has splashed onto the toilet's rim or floor with a paper towel.
